The purest expression of the bodhisattva’s will is in Chenrezig. This figure embodies the determination of all bodhisattvas to postpone their own Buddhahood until they have freed all sentient beings from suffering and the unlucky cycle of death and rebirth. His name translates as “the lord who looks in every direction.” The figure of Chenrezig/Avalokiteshvara encourages the cultivation of a calm, compassionate heart. Compassion forms the substrate from which successful works on the Buddhist path emerge. When a heart is truly compassionate, really in love with the work of compassion, it is spontaneous and effortless, with no expectation of reward.
